Get fit through dancing

CARLSWALD – Megan Erasmus says while dance can help one keep fit, it can also stimulate the spirit, mind, and soul, also reducing depression and building self-confidence.

Many people may be wondering how they can stay true to their New Year’s resolutions of staying fit and healthy.

M.E Dance Academy owner and instructor Megan Erasmus shared tips to help people stay in shape and one of those was through dancing.

Erasmus said dancing had many benefits, for both young and old.
For youngsters, Erasmus said it helped with flexibility, kept children’s minds sharp as they kids needed to remember and retain dance steps, reduced depression, enhanced discipline, and built self-confidence.
“Dancing can be a versatile language that is fun, creative and energetic. It can reach across all cultures and stimulates the spirit, body, mind, and soul. Dance goes where words fail.”

Tips for dancing especially for children:

  • Put on your favourite song and start jumping, bending your knees, swaying hips, clapping to the beat.
  • Do one move fast about 10 times or slowly at least five times.
  • Always stretch before a dance workout and after.
  • Get your parents to join in on the fun, in that way you do more reps.
