Midrand SPCA discusses plans

GLEN AUSTIN – Inspector Pamela Pretorius, general manager at the Midrand SPCA, said they plan on educating more people, reaching out, and assisting lower-income groups with their animals.

The Midrand SPCA shared some of its plans for the year.

Midrand SPCA’s general manager, inspector Pamela Pretorius, said plans include a rabies sterilisation campaign as the virus was beginning to starting to creep into Gauteng. The SPCA hopes people will come on board so they can do a massive outreach.

Pretorius said there are a few big projects in the pipeline. One is their farmyard because they were getting more and more farm animals.

“My big project is our hospital and clinic and converting our current offices, which include a clinic, into an entire office space.”

They hope to renovate their facility to accommodate a hospital, clinic, offices for inspectors, main reception area, and adoptions. “Our clinic will not be free, however, we will be offering a reduced rate to the lower-income groups who cannot afford private vets. We are hoping to eventually, offer all services – consultations, surgeries, and vaccinations.”

By the end of the year, the organisation hopes to have increased its proactivity in the communities. “[We have to] get out more and reach more of the places we have not gone to.”

She added that they also plan on ‘doing more prosecutions’. “We believe people in Midrand have gotten enough warnings, therefore now we have to prove a point.”

All that needs more hands. The SPCA hopes to have more space, hire more staff, get more funding and have more corporate businesses on board so they can make a difference in their area. “Just making a difference is an achievement, so we need to make sure that we do go out there and do more.
“Educate more and, at the end, buy our property and build our SPCA.”
