Security officer shot dead

GLEN AUSTIN – Station commander Brigadier David Tsotsotso condemned the brutality of the suspects and said 'no stone would be left unturned' in the investigation.

A security officer was shot dead on the corner of Olifantsfontein and Allen roads in Glen Austin on January 22.

According to the Midrand Police Station spokesperson, Constable Eliot Mabulane, a 36-year-old male security guard claimed that he and the deceased, his crew member, were escorting a popular dairy brands truck on the date.

On route to their destination, a bus full of protesters allegedly blocked the delivery truck in Glen Austin. “Protesters got out of [a] bus and surrounded the delivery truck. The security officers tried to control the mob of protesters and when they saw that they were becoming violent by stoning them, the delivery truck driver made a U-turn and tried to pick up his partner,” said Mabulane.

“That was when the protesters fired a gunshot and allegedly killed the victim who [was] the driver [of] the security truck.”

Mabulane explained that the victim died before the ambulance arrived on the scene. When the emergency vehicle arrived, paramedics declared the man dead on the scene.

“A 12 Musgrave shotgun and 25x live rounds belonging to the security guard were taken and no arrests were made since the murder,” Mabulane added.

Station commander Brigadier David Tsotsotso condemned the brutality brought forth by the suspects and tasked the investigation team to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book. “The police will not rest until the suspects are found, we will look at all possible evidence and leave no stone unturned,” Tsotsotso concluded.
