CPF urges community members to report crimes

MIDRAND – Patrols will assist the Sector Crime Forum (SCF) in a fight against crime in the community.

Midrand Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Sector 2 Crime Forum (SCF), are ready to resume their high visibility patrols with the police.

The patrols were placed on hold due to the lockdown restrictions.
Midrand CPF deputy chairperson and SCF chairperson, Tracy Basson, said the crime rate was low during the lockdown period. However, they have seen a substantial increase in crime over the past few months, especially with the approach of the festive season.
Basson said high visibility patrols were strategically planned in conjunction with the crime trends in the sector, and recently no serious crime had been reported.

“We urge residents that if they are aware of criminal activities in their sectors to make contact with their sector members and we can address the matters at hand directly with our sector commanders,” she said.

“We have had fantastic support from the community, especially after the recent protests and we are very grateful and thankful to them. “We also urge any residents that may be interested in joining the patrols to please make contact with us to discuss the requirements and sign up process.”

Basson added an increasing crime pattern over this period was property related crimes.
She said the SCF and CPF could not emphasise enough about the importance of home security, especially this year due to the added wear and tear caused by load shedding on all battery backups.

“We have noticed more driveway gates open than normal. Most of time, the residents are unaware that their gates are open… Please test your alarm signal and panic button regularly with your armed response company. One item that is often overlooked is the fitting of a gate sensor that is linked to your house alarm.”
