Weed control?

MIDRAND – Ward 132 Councillor Annette Deppe said that the weeds on roads and islands obstruct drivers, make the area look and untidy, and decreased property value.

Midrand Ward 132 councillor, Annette Deppe has raised concern about the tall weeds growing on the pavement along Harry Galaun Drive and said they were making the area look untidy.

Deppe said on October 6 that during the 15 years she had been a ward councillor in Midrand, she had never seen the pavements look as bad as they did. She added that the City of Joburg used to have a department that would spray the weeds on pavements, and then send a team around to take them out. “I have not seen that happen in the last five years.”

She added the resale value of residents’ properties would go down if the area was untidy.

Mosa Makhalima, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) spokesperson welcomed the complaint. She said on October 7 that the agency was aware of the weeds along Harry Galaun Drive and its surroundings. She added that an inspection was done on October 6, which was then followed by scheduling by the team.

A team from JRA, along with Makhalima, visited Harry Galuan Drive on October 12 to remove weeds along the pavements. Makhalima said JRA would be doing this continuously since it was the rainy season.
