Noise and air pollution in Glen Austin still ongoing

GLEN AUSTIN – John Nyambi, spokesperson for Region A Environmental Health Department said his department would review the situation and take further steps if necessary.

A business in Glen Austin which converts shipping containers into homes is still a matter of concern for some residents as they claim it is the source of noise and air pollution.

The residents reached out to their residents’ association and filed a formal complaint with the Region A Environmental Department as reported in Residents want to clear the air [Week ending September 19, 2021].

According to residents, City of Johannesburg had confirmed that Glen Austin was zoned for agricultural use only.

Rahaba Mokhothu, who lives next door to the property on which the business is operating, claimed the noise and air pollution were still ongoing and felt there was nothing being done to rectify the situation.

Region A Environmental Health Department spokesperson, John Nyambi confirmed that an inspection had been conducted at the property (93 Dale Road) on March 10 this year.

Nyambi added that all the non-compliances of the premises were identified and explained to the owner of the property, and a statutory notice dated March 15 detailing these transgressions had been served.

Nyambi confirmed that a second statutory notice had been served on the owner of the property to cease the noise pollution by September 22.

“The Environmental Health Department will review the situation and take further steps if necessary,” he said.
