Rajesh Waran of the Midrand Sports Academy explained they have been working with David Makhubo Secondary for the past two years to develop cricket. Their academy has been providing the Kaalfontein-based school with coaching for their children.

“We are excited to see how they would compete with a school with a slightly longer cricketing history than them. The youngsters could not wait to pit their skills against each other, despite being a few weeks into the season,” he added.

The match was reduced to a 10-over slugathon. Midrand High batted first, ready to showcase their batting might. It was a fast-paced game as runs and wickets flowed during the innings. Midrand High eventually posted 86 for the loss of six wickets in their 10 overs.

At the changeover, David Makhubo’s response got off to a flying start, scoring 10 runs in the first over. The Midrand High team kept the runs in check while also picking up a few wickets.

The game ebbed and flowed with both sides not giving in, but in the end, Midrand High came out on top. The local school secured a 31-run victory.

Coach Ryan Munyama of Midrand Sports Academy said it was exciting to see so much cricketing talent among local schools.

He added that they were currently partnered with the two schools to form an U17 side expected to compete in the summer. “We are confident that between the two schools, we will have a competitive side.”
