Local school shares plans to control Covid-19

MIDRAND – Curro Waterfall shared the plans they had put in place to make sure that they are able to control the Covid-19 pandemic since the school opened on July 26.

Curro Waterfall shared the plans they had put in place to make sure that they are able to reduce the risk of spreading the Covid-19 pandemic since the school opened on July 26.

Mark Heidmann, the executive head and Camilla Pretorius, head of the high school, discussed with the Midrand Reporter how they were going to make sure their learners excelled while having to abide by the rules put forward to fight the spread of the coronavirus.

Heidmann explained that across the country they had their schools’ safety protocol which were strict. “We seem to have had a pretty good run in a sense that we have not had too many infections, our infection rate has not reflected the broad one in our community and that is very much due to our protocol.”

With regard to how learners were reacting to the move from online learning back to physical learning, Camilla Pretorius said that they tried to follow quite a holistic approach when they did the transition. “We keep our learners in a routine, we start off our normal day with a register where the children get together online with their teacher, so the teacher could have an idea of how they are doing and to keep them engaged before the actual academic lesson starts.

“In terms of the academic lessons, the normal times have been reduced when we are at school. What is important for us is making sure that the standard of teaching we have at school is the same as online and for that, we have small little quizzes every single day for every lesson to make sure that what was covered in the lesson online the kids actually understand all the work we did online.”

She explained that academic events did still take place either outside or in their school hall with a maximum capacity of 50 people and some are also done virtually.

With regard to sports not happening, Heidmann said that Curro was heavily invested in online sports which they have pushed quite a bit toward closing the gap. “We have our hackathons, we have our mine crafts, we have our electronic sports gaming with the football and the call of duty and compete nationally and internationally.”

He concluded that lockdown has given them time to develop areas such as those.
