City Parks and Zoo plans to plant 1 000 trees in Midrand

MIDRAND – The Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo's kick started their tree planting project on 21 June.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo kick-started a project on 21 June to plant 1 000 trees along New and Walton roads in Midrand.

The much-awaited project saw excavators and water tankers at the site with the teams digging holes and planting trees. The Midrand Reporter previously reported on the project in Joburg City Parks and Zoo plans to plant 1 000 trees along Walton Road [Week ending 4 December 2020].

However, the project was delayed due to increased lockdown restrictions.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo manager for Region A, Joseph Ndou explained that the trees would increase biodiversity in Midrand as well as help reduce storm water run-off, air and water pollution, reduce energy costs and use of heating and cooling.

“Trees assist with so many things, they also reduce the urban heat island [when a city experiences much warmer temperatures than nearby rural areas], protect roadways and reduce the number of asphalt sealers required as well as provide valuable carbon storage and sequestration, and of course the well-being of Midrand community members, health-wise,” Ndou said.

“These trees being planted will increase Midrand’s biodiversity. To date, we have planted 431 trees and are solely concentrating on Midrand. But the plan is to plant trees in Fourways and donate fruit trees to Ivory Park residents due to the lack of planting space or narrow road reserves in that area.”
