Police charge driver with perjury

MIDRAND – Police arrested a suspect for allegedly reporting a fake hijacking.

Police arrested a 37-year-old suspect who allegedly lied about being hijacked recently.

Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, Constable Elliott Mabulane said, “The victim reported that he was pointed at with a firearm on the corner of Old Pretoria Main Road and West Road while driving.”

Mabulane added that the victim claimed that four suspects approached his car and ordered him and an associate to get into a Volkswagen Polo. But when he opened the case with the police, his associate immediately gave a different story, claiming that the driver handed the keys to his Toyota Quantum to the four suspects.

“The associate claimed that the driver walked to the alleged gunmen and handed his keys over to them.” The associate mentioned that there were no firearms used. Mabulane added that the investigating detectives charged the driver with perjury.

The vehicle was later recovered in Katlegong with no person in possession thereof.
