Healthcare workers are hit hard

JOBURG – Healthcare workers have worked throughout the pandemic with dedication and commitment.


More than 35 000 healthcare workers contracted Covid-19 by the end of last year of whom more than 400 died, according to Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize.

New stats are not available, which leave unions in the health industry sceptical.Healthcare workers have faced incredible challenges throughout the pandemic and community members have paid tribute to these dedicated professionals for their efforts.

The Fourways Review paid tribute to some of these healthcare workers in a feature published week ending 12 February. The feature included first-hand accounts of the challenges healthcare workers have faced. The Fourways Review team also handed out care packages to healthcare workers to thank them for their service.

Professional nurse at Witkoppen Clinic, Johannes Mandla, who works in the emergency section at the facility, explained that the pandemic brought a lot of fear and uncertainty to both patients and front-line workers. He said, “I’ve been in the profession for more than 13 years now and I’ve never experienced such a thing as this pandemic in my entire professional life.

The pandemic brought a lot of fear to everyone. We had to quickly adapt to a number of changes as a result of the pandemic outbreak.” Infection prevention specialist at Fourways Life hospital, Mishaan Daniel, highlighted all the procedures in place to keep staff and patients safe in Fourways Life ensures it has strict protocols in place published 14 July, 2020]. Daniel encouraged residents to make real changes at home, in their community and at their workplaces.

“When people keep safe at home and implement real changes, this will have a domino effect on the community and province. “It is our responsibility to protect ourselves and our neighbours. Wear cloth masks, practise hand hygiene, wash your masks in hot water, practise social distancing and sanitise.
