Residents on Eight Street worried about reckless driving

MIDRAND – Several emails were sent to the Ward Councillor regarding the speed humps/cameras to be installed said Wilma Bezuidenhout.

Carlswald View residents are worried about the safety of pedestrians and motorists after witnessing multiple accidents due to reckless driving on Eighth Street in Midrand.

The residents said they have been attempting to get speed humps or cameras installed on the road to curb reckless driving but there had been no progress.

Adeesh Bhogal, a resident at Carlswald View said since early last year they have tried to get speed bumps or speed cameras installed on the road. “I live on this road and irrespective of day or night, the speeding has just become out of hand,” said Bhogal.

Bhogal added that the trustees of residential complex Carlswald View along with Trafalgar, the managing agents of the complex, decided in May last year to take it upon themselves to try and get speed bumps or cameras installed to deter speeding on the road.

Wilma Bezuidenhout, senior portfolio administrator for Trafalgar said, “Several emails were sent to the ward councillor regarding the speed humps or cameras to be installed.”

Bhogal said they drew up a petition and followed all the necessary procedures to have the speed humps or cameras installed, however, there had been no progress since.

The Midrand Reporter reached out to ward councillor, Lerato Mphefo but Mphefo was not able to give comment prior to sending to press.

Kelebogile Mafa, the spokesperson for Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) advised that the process for requesting speed humps or traffic calming measures on a road was via a petition form which had to be filled in by the complainant and submitted to the City of Johannesburg Speakers Office.

“The petition will be registered with a reference number and allocated to the relevant department. If it is allocated to the JRA, our traffic engineers will assess the road to determine if it needs calming measures, and the type of calming measures required,” she added.

Mafa said the query regarding Eighth Street had been noted. “At the moment, we do not have a record of the speed humps request filed with the Office of the Speaker under the provided address.”
