Midrand Cricket Club finished off their year on a high note

OLIFANTSFONTEIN – The Midrand Cricket Club ended 2020 by hosting their annual sixes tournament.

Midrand Cricket Club ended last year by hosting their annual Midrand Sixes tournament in December.

Chairperson for the club Tshoko Moloko said, “The tournament has become a flagship event for the club with its thrill-a-minute action. Because of the epidemic, however, the family-friendly event had to be downscaled, with limited participating members.

“Be that as it may, the on-field action was not impacted too much. The tournament saw seven teams participating, mainly made up of members from the club. Defending champions playing under the name Tembisa Stars were again expected to do well in the tournament.”

The first day of the tournament was unfortunately rained out.

The next day the elimination matches were played with the first game being between The Brothers, made up of brothers Kaeshav and Darshik Lutchman, Rishen and Niven Govender and Christopher and Jordan King, and Get Coached which consisted of the Midrand Cricket Club coaches.

This match saw a fairly one-sided game with The Brothers knocking out Get Coached and joining the other teams Tembisa Stars, Old Timers and Tal to go head-to-head for the first prize.

Moloko added, “Following the round-robin matches, it was The Brothers and Tembisa Stars who secured their places in the final. The Tembisa outfit was the much-fancied side as they swept aside all who came their way. But cricket is a funny game and so it proved when the two squared off in the final.

“Tembisa Stars batted first… The Brothers bowled well and restricted Tembisa Stars to 46 in their five overs. The target was below par and Tembisa knew this, however, there was still hope that they could pick up a few early wickets and apply some pressure on the young side.”

After losing the early wicket of Kaeshav Lutchman, it was up to brothers Christopher and Jordan King to see their side home.

The two were cautious in their approach, that is until Jordan unleashed an onslaught on the opposition bowlers scoring a rapid 36 off just 10 balls. The cameo saw his side over the line with nine balls to spare.

“The giant killing act was complete to the amazement of all that were lucky enough to witness it,” said Moloko.

“The action on the field was of the highest quality. We saw a young side coming up against seasoned semi-pro players and delivering a performance that is a great testament for club cricket. Well done to The Brothers and we look forward to seeing the careers of schoolboys from their side flourish. We wish them all the best.”
