City rolls out their Kleena Joburg Plan

IVORY PARK – The 85-litre bins were replaced because they were outdated and were too heavy for Pikitup waste collection staff to handle.

The City of Johannesburg rolled out its Kleena Joburg Reloaded programme in Ivory Park on 14 September.

Pikitup undertook the project to replace the 85-litre refuse bins with 240-litre ones in Ivory Park, Rabie Ridge, Commercia and Mayibuye. Some residents in the targeted areas were still using plastic bags.

The 85-litre bins were replaced because they were outdated and were too heavy for Pikitup waste collection staff to handle.

MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department, Mpho Moerane in his address at the Ivory Park North Hall, urged the residents to make use of the new bins in a bid to address the issue of illegal dumping.

“A cleaner city attracts investment. Therefore, together we can ensure that our city sustains its status as the economic hub of the country for generations to come,” he explained.

“I also appreciate the efforts of Pikitup to undertake a pro-active and instantaneous approach to service delivery. Through this approach, I am informed that by November, 35 000 bins would have been distributed in this area. Thus replacing the old and outdated 85-litre bins which are burdensome to efficient service delivery, with the more efficient 240-litre bins.”

He added that Pikitup had always maintained that keeping the city clean was a collective responsibility.

“In line with this acknowledgement, I appeal to Midrand residents to use the issued bins for the purpose that they have been designed. Often times, waste bins are used for other purposes, for example, they are used as transport to ferry alcoholic beverages from one place to another, and in some instances, they are used as wardrobes to store excess clothing.

“These are examples of how not to use the allocated waste bins. Using them for such purposes is counter-productive.”

Moerane added that this also contributed to the proliferation of illegal dumping sites.

He said in the last reporting period, Pikitup reported that it had to clear 4 649 illegal dumping sites at a cost of millions of rands, and at the expense of efficient service delivery. “This depot was responsible for clearing 1 060 illegal dumping spots. This points to the fact that this area has a serious and severe problem with illegal dumping.”
