Ivory Park police detain three in one week for illegal possession of unlicensed firearms

KAALFONTEIN – Suspect arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates' Court.

Ivory Park police arrested a 25-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on 20 August while conducting Operation O Kae Molao.

According to the Ivory Park Police Station spokesperson, Captain Bernard Matimulane, the suspect was allegedly seen by Kaalfontein residents shooting randomly in the air in the early hours of that morning.

“Even though the reasons for the random shots are not yet known, it is assumed that he may have been scarring away the local community patrollers nearby.

“What the suspect was not aware of was that he had been seen and his identity was known,” said Matimulane.

He added that the police were informed and it was their prompt response that culminated in the suspect’s swift arrest.

“He was found with a pistol and nine rounds of live ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court soon to answer to a charge of illegal possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“His arrest brings to three the number of people arrested in the Ivory Park policing precinct so far this week. Earlier this week, Ivory Park police working together with the local community, managed to arrest two men in their early 20s in Ivory Park’s Ext 2 for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and seven rounds of live ammunition.”

Station Commander Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, expressed his appreciation to the community for providing information which led to these arrests.

“We are always ready, at any time to follow up on any information that is brought to our attention,” he said.

Ngcobo concluded by encouraging community members to come forward with information that might lead to other arrests and assured them that any information would be treated confidentially.
