Community members lend a hand to care centre

IVORY PARK – Local resident Mirriam Bila and the Mkhabela Obedience Foundation gave back to members of their community.

A young Ivory Park community member is dedicated to giving back.

Mirriam Bila partnered up with the Mkhabela Obedience Foundation reached to assist the Tembisa-based Tshepang Care Centre on 5 August. Bila said that she felt that the care centre was a suitable choice because of the library they have for children. “I am a firm believer in education, I know what the power of education can do to change someone’s life.

“It is touching to know that though there are kids living in centres they still prosper to get varsity qualifications. It is fulfilling to know that they have accomplished much just from donations.”

The Mkhabela Obedience Foundation, which was established earlier this year, aims to empower members of the community. Together, Bila and the foundation donated clothes to the centre.

Obedience Mkhabela, founder of the Mkhabela Obedience Foundation also added that this donation came about after realising that the coronavirus pandemic has left many families distressed thus making it difficult for parents to provide for their families. “The lockdown has affected us all in different ways. I was retrenched from work, generally thousands of employees are faced with the same situation,” said Mkhabela.

“Since the lockdown, the centre has seen an increase in the number of children from around the community coming in for breakfast and lunch.

“Usually the centre caters for almost 200 kids, but surprisingly they now feed almost 400 to 500 kids daily from the community.

“We saw a need to help, if we can’t feed the kids we can at least clothe them.”

Mkhablea concluded by encouraging members of the community to donate clothes, stationary, books, or blankets to any charity organisation.
“We collect and donate to various community organisations in need.”

Founder of the day care centre Sarah Sibiya, extended her gratitude to the pair for their donations. “We encourage our kids to focus on education most, we have produced matric and varsity graduates.”
