Covid-19 still causes problems for the City of Joburg

JOBURG – The MMC for Finance asks the public for patience and understanding when visiting the City's Customer Service Centres.

City of Johannesburg MMC for Finance Jolidee Matongo recently conducted oversight visits at various Customer Service Centres following repeated customer complaints about the efficiency the centres.

These include the Johannesburg Call Centre in the inner-city and Customer Service Centres in Roodepoort, Randburg and Braamfontein.

Matongo said, “Although staff has been fully equipped with PPE (personal protective equipment) and facilities are regularly cleaned and sanitised, the centres have had to temporarily close several times as a safety precaution each time someone tested positive.”

Unfortunately, this has resulted in service interruptions and increased backlog of customer queries he added. The centres were initially each reopened with 30 per cent staff capacity being rotated per shift in a bid to revive the revenue collection business of the City in-line with the guidelines prescribed by national government. The centres have since gradually increased operating staff capacity to 50 per cent but the been necessary to allow self-isolation of contacts and the cleaning of facilities ahead of resuming services to protect both the City’s employees and customers.

Matongo reassured residents of Johannesburg that the City remained committed to ensuring the safety of the City’s employees and its customers. These include regular testing and provision of PPE for staff, as well as strict facility access controls where customers are sanitised upon entry, and the rule of ‘no mask no entry’ applies.

“We also wish to appeal to the people of Johannesburg to practise patience and understanding when visiting our customer centres. We encourage residents who can access our services online to do so using either email to send queries, or our social media platforms.”

He encouraged those who are unable to pay for municipal services to voluntarily approach the City’s Credit Control Department to make alternative arrangements to keep their accounts up to date by sending an email to credit control Joburg.org.za.Regional Customer Service Centre (CSC) email addresses:
