ICYMI: Midrand SPCA welcomes new clinic

GLEN AUSTIN – The Midrand SPCA has introduced their clinic to assist animals in their area.

The Midrand SPCA has opened their clinic to assist the impoverished community with primary health care for their animals.

General manager of the organisation Pam Pretorius said that the SPCA had the idea to open the clinic for a long time and finally started their services on 1 June. She added, “There is a real need in the area with many owners struggling and the coronavirus pandemic with lockdown has made that need even greater as more people have lost their income”

The organisation teamed up with a group of veterinarians in the Midrand area to assist with the Midrand SPCA’s clinic which operates from their premises in Glen Austin. She added that the care provided is limited to basic health care and is assessed on a case-by-case basis with a consultation fee to assist its operation.

Pretorius explained that the clinic is for owners who cannot afford private treatment for their animals and also acts as a place to educate and engage with community members on their animal’s health. “The health of your animals is important to take note of. Many people get sick and they won’t go to the doctor immediately, sometimes they nurse their sickness themselves at home, but you can’t do that with animals, so the clinic is there to assist.

“There are residents who give so much for their animals and look after them with love, but they don’t have the money for health care so we would like to assist them where possible.”

Pretorius added that the SPCA would like to expand their operations and are calling on the community and private companies to assist with any donations including construction which could help expand their current clinic, theatre and vaccination room, monetary donations for much-needed drugs or healthcare companies who can assist with the necessary medical supplies to keep the clinic going.
