Some schools resume today, while others will resume later

MIDRAND – Schools across Midrand have taken different decisions concerning the dates on which learners will return to school.

There has been a large amount of confusion at local public and private schools regarding the scheduled return of Grade 7 and matric learners on 1 June.

The Department of Basic Education released a statement late on 31 May, stating that Grade 7 and 12 learners will no longer return to school on 1 June. A decision was taken that learners will only return to school on 8 June, since many schools were not prepared to resume teaching.

The Midrand Reporter spoke to a number of local schools in our area to find out when their learners would return to school.

Marketing and admissions manager at Beaulieu College Lynette Gray reported that matric learners had returned to school on 1 June, reassuring the public of their readiness to resume classes.

Christ Church College Principal David Bell said that independent schools are allowed to return on 1 June. He said that the school took the decision to allow matric learners to return to school on 1 June.

St Peter’s College took the decision to delay the return of learners. Marketing manager Nosipho Nkosi said that the school is awaiting news from the Minister of Basic Education today before announcing the return of learners.

Personal assistant to the principal at Summerhill International School Felidia Klaaste said that matric learners are expected to return to school on 2 June.

The Minister of Basic Education is expected to brief media on 1 June at 11am to clarify the confusion and map a way forward.
