ICYMI: Striders to run miles after Comrades Marathon is cancelled

MIDRAND – Runners can look forward to Midrand Strider's challenge to run 90km in 12 hours.

Local running club, Midrand Striders will host its first Mega Miles Legends Run over four days in June.

The idea is to run 90km within 12 hours between 6am on 11 June and 9am on 14 June, and this can be done anywhere.”It’s a Midrand Striders event to commemorate the cancelled 2020 Comrades run,” explained the running club’s Nomathemba Masuku.

“Runners will run for 12 hours, which is the stipulated Comrades’ time to finish, over the days specified. Anyone is welcome to run, it’s free and it’s a virtual run, so people will be running wherever they are and abiding to the lockdown rules prevailing at the time.”

She believes the event will keep everyone’s spirits high after one of South Africa’s favourite ultra-marathons was cancelled.Community members can sign up for the event on the Midrand Striders Facebook page or through Strava, a social-fitness network.

Digital finishers’ medals will be given to anyone completing the challenge.Masuku encouraged everyone to get involved. Even if they cannot run 90km in 12 hours, they can at least see how far they can get.

Lockdown restrictions could be eased even further by then and this run may prove to be a great opportunity for runners to test themselves and get back into the swing of things.
