Midrand SPCA encourages residents to prepare themselves and their animals during lockdown

MIDRAND – The Midrand SPCA wants the local community to be prepared for the coronavirus lockdown.

The Midrand SPCA has appealed to the community to prepare themselves and their animals during the coronavirus lockdown.

The organisation received a case where a local resident, who tested positive for the coronavirus, needed housing for his dog on 27 March. General manager of the Midrand SPCA, Pam Pretorius said that they assisted by organising housing for his dog, but cannot do this again and is appealing to the community to help each other in these situations involving medical emergencies.

The organisation is currently operational for emergencies with inspectors on call but their adoptions and vaccinations cannot be done. She asked the community to work together in this time to lessen the pressure on their resources.

She added, “We’ve received calls from residents who have lost their animals and don’t want to go out because of the lockdown, so they call us. Please assist each other in these cases as much as possible as we have cruelty cases also to deal with.”

She said that residents who have lost their animals should email a full description and picture along with their contact details to manager@midrandspca.co.za if the organisation comes across their animal. She urged the community to not call them for this issue.

The SPCA has seen a tremendous response from the community and has received food donations since the lockdown began. They are still asking for financial donations from the community during this time as their primary forms of income, adoptions and vaccination, have been halted during the coronavirus lockdown.

Any residents willing to assist the organisation can contact them at manager@midrandspca.co.za
