Cricket clubs share points from remaining matches

MALBORO – Midrand Knights share possible points from remaining games with other clubs, lead to overall positive results.

When Central Gauteng Lions stopped the club cricket leagues, the possible points to be awarded from the remaining games were shared equally between competing clubs.

For Midrand Knights Cricket Club there were three games left on average. When the points were shared it led to results that some teams liked, and others didn’t.

For instance, the club’s Sunday 3 team, after an already good season for them, were awarded enough points to hold on to the top position and win the league by just one point.

The Saturday 6 team, however, were in good form and looking set to winning the title but ended up in second place, losing by just two points.

“That team is gutted to be honest but we accept the decisions made and overall we are happy with how it went this year,” said Midrand Knights chairperson, TK Chettiar.

“Last year we did not win any trophies but this year we won one and came second in two leagues.”

This includes the club’s 2nd Saturday team as they like to call it, who played in the Saturday 4 League.

Chettiar added that despite it being so near the end of the cricket season, he had encouraged players to maintain their fitness at home.

“Guys can get their wives to toss the ball to them or do gym at home. If the family gets involved in a sport it strengthens the family bond. We are trying to take positives out of this situation rather than just the negatives.”

He added that momentum from this good season finish can be carried to the next season, starting in October.

Furthermore, it is as good a time as any to sign up at Midrand Knights. The club has a junior section from U9 to U15 level, a thriving open men’s section and is looking at getting a women’s team running again.

The club is based at Malboro Stadium.
