Covid-19: Misconceptions of face masks

JOBURG – There are correct ways and reasons to wear a face mask.

As the world tries to slow down the spread of Covid-19 there have been conflicting reports on the usage of masks and the possible risks that they might impose.

According to the World Health Organisation, face masks will prevent asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic people from spreading droplets containing the virus.

When people speak, there are always droplets coming out of their mouth. These droplets land on surfaces, which is why it is important to wash your hands frequently.

WHO has clarified that healthy people should not be wearing masks unless they are caring for someone with Covid-19 or if they are coughing or sneezing.

On the WHO site, it read, “Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water. If you wear a mask, then you must know how to use it and dispose of it properly.”

WHO also wants to maximise the availability of face masks to medical staff due to the shortage so that people do not stock buy on masks if they do not need them.

The correct way to wear a mask according to WHO:

  • Clean hands your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water before you put the mask on
  • Cover mouth and nose with mask and make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask
  • Avoid touching the mask while using it; if that happens, clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water
  • Replace the mask with a new one as soon as it is damp and do not re-use single-use masks.
  • To remove the mask: Remove it from behind (do not touch the front of the mask), discard immediately in a closed bin, clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
