Midrand councillors ready to combat Covid-19

RABIE RIDGE – Councillors prepare to fight the spread of the coronavirus in their community.

The spread of coronavirus has been growing rapidly in the county, but local councillors are prepared to fight its escalation in their wards.

Coronavirus has been growing each and every day with Gauteng leading in terms of the numbers recorded by health institutions, at the time of publication on 24 March.

Councillors told the Midrand Reporter how they intend to address Covid-19 should it start escalating in their community with the help and instructions given by the Department of Health.

Ward 110 councillor Lesibana Lamola said that he is well aware that the only solution to prevent the virus is by following guidelines. “Should the virus affect our community, we as leaders will also have to take action to prevent it. We will have to cut the movement of people, especially those who have no purpose of going out. We will have to try and adapt to a new method of communicating to prevent the spreading of the virus.”

“We will try to establish centres where residents can clean themselves and also advice local retail owners not increase the prices of sanitisers. The only good thing is that that no deaths have been recorded, yet what worries us it that Gauteng contributes the most in the growth of Covid-19.”

Ward 80 councillor Makgoba Pagadi added that they have to follow given guidelines and instructions from the speaker of council Nonceba Molwele and other ministers. “Currently all the public meetings have been cancelled and there will be limitations to funeral attendance. We, as councillors, will have block meeting with less than 100 as it is our jobs to inform the community about the virus and decisions taken as they aim to benefit them.”

Councillors seek to also follow guidelines given by the Mayor of Johannesburg Geoffrey Makhubo which explained how the Gauteng government plans to deal with Covid-19.
