Gauteng Premier implements numerous safety precautions to prevent spread of Covid-19

MIDRAND – Premier David Makhura said Gauteng is vulnerable because it has many points of entry and it is densely populated.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has announced that a number of safety precautions will be implemented around the province to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Makhura laid out the measures during a press briefing in Midrand on 18 March. This follows a special Provincial Executive Council meeting, which included the district and metropolitan mayors.

According to Makhura, Gauteng is vulnerable because of its many points of entry and it is densely populated. These factors make the province vulnerable and, as such, they have created a Gauteng Covid-19 team to address the challenges the province will face. The team will include Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku; Gauteng MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture Mbali Hlope; Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo; MEC for Infrastructure Development and Property Management Tasneem Motara and Gauteng Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko.

However, Makhura emphasised that they would also engage with private and religious organisations to see how they may be able to assist.

MEC Masuku said they are in the process of acquiring a 250-bed structure from a private structure to assist with treating patients. The department is also in the process of procuring more testing kits.

Mazibuko added that there will be restrictions on large gatherings. As of 18 March, all on-consumption premises (where alcohol is consumed) may have no more that 50 people at any time. All restaurants, clubs and taverns must close at 6pm from Monday to Saturday and at 1pm on Sunday. There are also limitations on the sale, dispensation and transportation of liquor.

Those who wish to host gatherings such as funerals will need to apply for permission at a local police station.
