Makhubo visits Diepsloot as part of safety campaign

DIEPSLOOT – Johannesburg mayor Geoff Makhubo, police minister Bheki Cele and other stakeholders visited the Diepsloot informal settlement as part of a festive season safety operation.

Region A, which includes Midrand, recently got a visit from the mayor of Johannesburg in support of safety during the festive season.

The executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg, councillor Geoff Makhubo, joined police minister Bheki Cele, Gauteng community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko, and MMC for Public Safety councillor Mally Mokoena as well as the police’s top brass in an anti-crime blitz in Region A at the end of last year.

The minister was in town to inspire officers from the South African Police Service and the Joburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) who were deployed across various crime hotspots ahead of and during the festive season.

In a show of force, the multi-agency force led by Minister Cele combed through the Mashamplani informal settlement in Diepsloot looking to root out criminal elements and inspect service delivery shortfalls.

On social media, Mayor Geoff Makhubo said that the level of grime he had seen during his visit to Diepsloot made him want to intervene immediately, although he did not elaborate on how.

Tembe added that although policing dynamics in informal settlements were totally different from the norm, law enforcement would have to do its best to maintain law and order.

Mayor Makhubo urged residents to stay safe and respect the rule of law. “We call on all road users and pedestrians to obey the rules of the road, don’t drink and drive, and please, arrive alive.

“Let us work together with our law enforcement agencies to ensure we are all safe during this festive season.”

On the same day and as part of the same operation, Makhubo and Cele also conducted a meet-and-greet at the Mall of Africa to assure residents that they would be protected by law enforcement agencies.

Law enforcement agencies also conducted an integrated Joint Crime Prevention roadblock on the R55 in Olivenhoutbos.
