Adoptions are on the rise at SPCA

MIDRAND – The Midrand SPCA reports back from the festive season.

The Midrand SPCA has reported back on a number of positives and negatives that occurred over the festive season.

The organisation had a busy festive season with various calls of animal cruelty or cases of abandonment being reported for them to investigate.

General manager of the Midrand SPCA Pam Pretorius said, “At the beginning of the festive season, as businesses close for the holidays, we saw a number of pets being handed over to our society for various reasons.

“I think it’s very sad to see so many unwanted animals, but we are grateful that these animals were rather handed in as opposed to being abandoned or dumped.

She added, “But on a more positive note, we have seen our adoption rates increase over the past year and many of the animals surrendered to us are already booked for adoption, pending home inspections.

“We would like to just remind the public that owning a pet is a lifelong commitment and while we want to encourage people to adopt, we also need to remind people of this so that decisions are not made lightly.”

Pretorius said that the organisation received numerous calls with regard to missing dogs from the local community, but very few stray or found dogs have been handed over or reported to the Midrand SPCA over the festive season.

“There are people who find a lost dog over the festive season and usually hold onto the animals before handing them over after the new year and some people also choose to keep these animals that they have found.

“The SPCA is the municipal pound in Midrand for all stray animals and we are asking that people please hand in these animals to us.”

Pretorious warned, “Keeping a stray animal without reporting it could be regarded as theft and the legal owner may open a case against a person that kept their pet.”

The festive season also saw other great successes for the Midrand SPCA when they received help from the Metro police with the assistance in confiscating illegal fireworks in the Midrand area.

She said Metro police were amazing in enforcing the by-laws against the sale of illegal fireworks for which the organisation is truly grateful.

The Midrand SPCA has had a fast-paced start to the year and is calling on the community for assistance. “We are in desperate need of donations towards fuel so that we can attend to the calls that we receive. We have three vehicles on the roads daily and our bills are on the rise. We would appreciate any donations for us to pay for our fuel so that we may continue to serve the communities’ animals.”
