Heavy rains have had little impact on the Vaal Dam

JOBURG – Gauteng rainfall predominantly goes to the North West province.


Many parts of South Africa has experienced heavy rains and localised flooding, particularly in the Gauteng province in the past week, but the much-needed rainfall has had little impact on the Vaal Dam. 

According to Gauteng Weather, the Department of Water and Sanitation said the recent heavy rains have not risen the Vaal’s capacity as yet, which has now plunged to 39.05 per cent full as of Tuesday morning (10 December).

The latest infographic on the department’s website shows the dam capacity has not been above 45 per cent for the past few months.

Gauteng Weather explained that the province’s rainfall predominantly goes to the North West, an illustration of the Vaal’s catchment areas was posted on Twitter:
