Premier David Makhura mourns the passing of MEC Thuliswa Nkabinde-Khawe

JOHANNESBURG – Premier David Makhura expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family, comrades and friends of Thuliswa Nkabinde-Khawe who passed away recently.


According to Gauteng Premier David Makhura, MEC Thuliswa Nkabinde-Khawe passed away in hospital on Friday evening, 1 November.

“It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that I inform the people of Gauteng about the untimely passing of Ms Thuliswa Nkabinde-Khawe, the MEC of Social Development in Gauteng,” said Makhura said in a statement. 

He said he had appointed MEC Nkabinde-Khawe as part of the Gauteng team to be the political head of the social development portfolio. “Prior to her appointment, MEC Nkabinde-Khawe was a long-serving member and chairperson of the same portfolio. MEC Nkabinde-Khawe demonstrated dedication and commitment to the people of Gauteng.”

Makhura added that Nkabinde-Khawe was passionate about the issues affecting the poor, children, women, the elderly and people living with disability as the most vulnerable section of the population. She was also on the forefront of fighting gender-based violence and spearheaded the provision of support to the survivors.

“MEC Nkabinde-Khawe was a committed activist who traversed the different parts of the province organising communities as a leader of the South African National Civic Organization (Sanco).

“I would like to send my heartfelt condolences to the family, comrades and friends of MEC Nkabinde-Khawe. MEC Nkabinde-Khawe will be dearly missed by all of us in the Executive Council as we work to grow Gauteng together.”
