Mmusi Maimane announces resignation from parliament, chief whip follows suit
JOHANNESBURG – Maimane was expected to stay on as the leader of the DA in parliament until the end of the year.
Yesterday (23 October) members of the media waited for close to five hours after former leader of the DA, Mmusi Maimane invited them to Nkululeko House in Bruma where he was expected to make an announcement.
At the time, it was speculated that he may be resigning from his position as the leader of the Democratic Alliance. Four hours later, he announced that he was stepping down as the leader of the DA but not as the leader of the party in parliament.

This morning, however, Maimane announced that he has resigned from both of his positions, as the leader of the DA and parliament.
I have worked tirelessly to build the project of One SA for All. It’s been my greatest honour to serve the people of SA and will continue to do so. I have today resigned from the DA and Parliament. Thank you to the people of this country for your faith in our nation. God bless SA

Maimane was expected to stay on as the leader of the DA in parliament until the end of the year. John Steenhuisen has also said that he is no longer the chief whip of the DA. He said that his term was linked to that of Maimane since he was appointed by Maimane.
After saying “despite my best efforts, the DA is not the vehicle best suited to take forward the vision of building one South Africa for all." you had no choice but to walk away from the DA

All the best.
You can leave with your head held high in that you fought the good fight.
There are no scandals or corruption cases following you, which is more than can be said of most South African politicians – which is probably why you can leave freely.
