According to security company Fidelity ADT, there have been several incidents of robberies at schools in central Johannesburg and Fidelity ADT is urging schools to boost their security.
“There were two recent incidents in the space of a month at a school in Bosmont. The second incident took place in the early hours of 5 September where 50 newly-replaced computers were stolen out of the media centre,” said Natasha Springfield, community development manager Fidelity ADT said in a statement.
Springfield said there was also an incident at a school in Mayfair last week and another one at a high school in Rossmore. “Criminals seem to be using the same modus operandi where they tie up the guards and target the media centre where they steal computers.”
Along with schools being targeted, Springfield said there have also been a few incidents in Fordsburg, Brixton and Mayfair over the last few months where suspects gained entry into businesses by removing aircon units on walls or climbing through roofs.
“We are approaching the festive season and we generally see a spike in crime in the months leading up to December. We urge all business owners, heads of school and residents to make sure all security measures are working and boosted, if necessary.”
Springfield suggested installing outdoor detection devices and perimeter security to reduce the chances of criminals reaching the property and gaining access to the roof or media centres.
