2 men arrested after mob justice murder

IVORYPARK – Ivory Park Police arrest two suspects who were taking part in a mob justice killing someone after accusing him and his brother of stealing.

Two men were arrested on 8 September after allegedly taking part in a mob justice murder in the Lindokuhle Section of Ivory Park .

According to the Ivory Park Police Station spokesperson Captain Bernard Matimulane, the police became aware of a mob justice incident when they were notified that a 30-year-old patient died shortly after arrival at the Tembisa Hospital.

“Following that, the police, while conducting further investigations, learnt that the deceased and his brother who escaped, had been accused of a robbery.

“What is not clear is who they robbed and what kind of items they are accused of taking.

He added, “The two brothers were being accused [of robbery]. One of the suspects hit one of the alleged robbers with a brick. He, however, managed to flee the scene and escape, leaving the deceased who was his brother, in the hands of the community members.

“The assault on the deceased continued until he was left for dead. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival in hospital early Sunday.”

Matimulane said the two suspects, aged 23 and 40, are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court soon to answer to a charge of murder.

Ivory Park Police Station Commander Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo expressed his appreciation to the witnesses who came forward and whose information has assisted the police in effecting a speedy arrest.

Ngcobo concluded, “All law-abiding citizens within this policing precinct have a responsibility to report incidents such as this, as failure to do so will give rise to lawlessness.”
