‘Safety at schools is a serious issue’

IVORY PARK – The Ivory Park Police Youth Desk and the Provincial Department of Community Safety launched School Safety Campaign at Ivory Park Secondary School.

Members of the Ivory Park Police Station Youth Desk and the Provincial Department of Community Safety visited Ivory Park Secondary School in Ivory Park on 1 August for the launch of a school safety campaign.

According to Ivory Park Police Station spokesperson, Captain Bernard Matimulane, the aim of the launch was to encourage the learners to be responsible and assist the school management and the youth desk by being their eyes and ears regarding school safety. He said, “Despite the programme being launched at Ivory Park Secondary School, learner representatives from other schools in the area such as JB Matabane, Ponelopele Oracle, Tsosoloso Ya Africa and Tswelopele Secondary Schools were among those in attendance.

“The social crime prevention desk of the Ivory Park SAPS, under whose command the youth desk resides, will be keeping a close eye on the school safety campaign as they want to ensure that schools are not turned into playgrounds for bullies, and also so that all negative elements in the schools are quickly noted and dealt with.” He added that this included anyone bringing illegal substances to school and those that were prone to gamble during school hours. “The Ivory Park Secondary School launch was the first, the youth desk will soon roll this campaign to other schools in the area in the short to medium term.”

Ivory Park police Commander, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo said, “School safety is a serious issue and we hope the launch of this campaign will go a long way in addressing lawlessness and bullying in our schools.” Ngcobo added that he had instructed the station’s social crime prevention desk to work hard in ensuring that this campaign ran effectively and would ensure that it received all the necessary support it needed to succeed.
