Another rental scam victim

MIDRAND – The Midrand police are investigating a case of fraud and are calling on residents to remain vigilant.

The Midrand police are calling on the local community to remain vigilant regarding fraudulent social media advertisements.

The police are currently investigating a case of fraud following a complainant paying R9 600 to a suspect who pretended to be the owner of a flat which he claimed to be renting.

A spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, Constable Thabiso Selowa, said the complainant responded to an internet advert for a rental in a complex in Midrand. The complainant reached out to the contact person on the advertisement who told them to come and view the flat and pay an amount of R4 800 upfront as a deposit.

On 25 July, the complainant paid the remaining amount of

R5 100 but then the suspect ceased to answer his phone to continue to impart any further information with the complainant.

Selowa added that the community must be aware of a scamming syndicate in the Midrand area who utilise social media as a vehicle for their activities. The syndicate advertise rentals or motor vehicles asking victims for money upfront before discontinuing communication with them.

She added that prospective customers should approach the body corporate of the complex that has been advertised to order to ascertain whether the advertiser is a legitimate contact. She also said that persons looking to buy a car from an advertiser should find a safe place to do the transaction which includes coming to the police station who would help mediate the situation.
