Public safety first

MIDRAND – Noordwyk High School learners were selected as 2019 Public Safety Schools Ambassadors.

Mamatsiri Ngoepe and Gabriello Lichaba of Noordwyk High School were selected as the 2019 Public Safety Schools Ambassadors after participating in the 2019 School Emergency Response Team training programme on 13 June.

According to a statement released by the City of Johannesburg MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun, the department welcomed 380 learners from 16 schools across the City as qualified members of the team.

The City usually hosts this campaign annually, where learners from different schools take up the challenge and receive training in basic first aid, firefighting and emergency response skills.

Sun said to the newly honoured team members, “I am extremely proud of you for stepping up to the plate and making the effort to learn a set of important life skills that could one day save someone’s life.

“The blue badge pins you are about to receive is a symbol of your bravery and skills, wear it with pride and take care of those in need.”

The learners who participated in the campaign competed for the prestigious positions of Public Safety Schools Ambassadors.

They had to present the safety challenges they had identified to the panel of judges and explain how they will work to find solutions in ensuring the safety of their fellow learners.

The highest scoring candidates were then selected as the ambassadors for a period of a year and get to lead other schools in the promotion of school safety.

Noordwyk High School headmaster Alex Tau said, “I feel very honoured to have learners who will be representing us in the region. I am very proud of them.”
