New spekbooms at Summerhill

MIDRAND – Summerhill College have introduced spekbooms to each of their classrooms.

Summerhill College has embraced the environment in all its wonder when the school introduced spekboom plants into their classrooms.

Executive principal of the school Clare Locker said, “In line with our vision to raise awareness, to value and to conserve our natural environment we introduced the humble spekboom to our school. We are proud to announce that we have introduced an impressive 100 spekboom plants to Summerhill Nursery, Preparatory, and College and we are very excited about this most beneficial addition to our family.”

She explained that the succulent-like shrub/small tree was chosen due to its various beneficial qualities including its ability to absorb carbon which she stressed was important for the Midrand area, while also being very water-friendly.

Each classroom, from the nursery school to the college, and the offices were gifted a small spekboom. Locker said,

“The teachers have given each of their trees a name and the students are going to assist in ensuring that their class spekboom remains happy and well looked after.

“Summerhill School strives to be an oasis in Midrand for fauna and flora. We have also introduced bat boxes, owl boxes, a compost heap, an earthworm farm and a fully operational outdoor classroom, to name a few.”
