104 – It’s just a number

MIDRAND – She spent half of her life as a vegetarian and played tennis until her 70s.

A resident of Highveld Gardens Retirement Lodge in Midrand, Norah Lillico ages gracefully as she celebrated her 104th birthday on 10 April.

“We really don’t know what to say. We are astounded….really amazed she has reached this age. We can’t believe it. She would always tell us that it must be her good Scottish genes that make her look healthy and strong because her father was Scottish,” said her daughter-in-law, Jane.

Lillico who has been residing at the lodge since 2012, can partially see and hear and uses a walking stick to move around. Her family attributes her longevity to her healthy lifestyle. The former teacher by profession spent half of her life as a vegetarian and played tennis until her 70s.

“She was very keen on living healthy and always emphasised on no overindulging.

“She can still recognise us although she cannot properly do other things because of her age,” added Jane.

A staff nurse at the lodge, Fortune Makhuvele said even at Lillico’s age she still enjoys reading her daily newspapers. “She is very strict on what she wants. She loves her privacy and we are blessed to have her at the lodge,” she said.

Lillico has one surviving son, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
