99 reasons to brighten up

NOORDWYK – The City of Johannesburg and City Power celebrated the installation of 99 street lights on Olifantsfontein Road.

The streets of Midrand are a bit brighter after the City of Joburg hosted a special ceremony to switch on new street lights.

Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba switched on 99 street lights along Olifantsfontein Road in Midrand on 2 April. The recently installed lights form part of a R1.6 million project with a total of 266 street lights across Midrand.

Ward 112 councillor Madeline Hicklin said that the addition of the lights in the area will be of great benefit to pedestrians and motorists who have struggled to get around in the darkness or rain. The street lights will also illuminate the pathway and by keeping the area bright will help to keep commuters safer.

Mashaba said, “I think the lights are all about the safety of the residents. That’s one of our main focuses. As we are looking to bring more police officers to our streets, these new street lights will be a great benefit to the officers.”

He added, “Numerous installation and maintenance projects are happening throughout the city. While new streetlights are being installed, City Power continues to maintain over 270 000 existing street lights.”

While the mayor and City Power celebrated the installation of the street lights, he added, “As we continue to strive to deliver quality basic services to residents of Johannesburg, we also encourage residents to report vandalism of our infrastructure, including that of street lights so that we can ensure speedy repair and restoration.”
