Midrand Knights beat Soweto CC

MALBORO GARDENS – The Midrand Knights bag 10-run win against Soweto Cricket Club.

Midrand Knight Cricket Club proved too good in a low-scoring match on a dry wicket, when they beat Soweto Cricket Club in their Sunday 3 League match.

Warm weather accompanied by a light breeze now and again greeted players at Malboro Stadium (AKA ‘The G’) on 31 March. Playing at home, Midrand Knights were expecting the dry wicket beforehand and braced themselves for a day of spin bowling.

The visitors from Soweto arrived late and forfeited the toss to the Knights, who opted to bat first.

The openers did well to put on a 58-run stand in 11 overs. But as the ball got older, the wicket wore out and spinners started to wreck mayhem.

Knights wickets fell in regular intervals and it became almost impossible to score freely.

“Credit must go to the four Soweto spinners, who made full use of the conditions, and bowled with great accuracy and discipline,” said Midrand Knights vice chairperson, Jeremy Meiring, who also played on the day.

The Knights were eventually bowled out for 133 in 29.3 overs, losing nine of their wickets for only 75 runs. Big-hitting Somu Shekar starred with the bat with a somewhat subdued 27 off 40 balls.

The Knights were still confident they could defend their low total at The G. They were helped by the fact that cloud cover and wind became more apparent later in the day.

Shekar again led from the front with his off-spin bowling and was well supported by Vamshi Vure and Kishore Maramreddy.

The trio caused the Soweto batsmen headaches and didn’t give them any loose balls to gain momentum. Just as in the first innings, batsmen had no answers to the turn on the pitch.

Soweto was bowled out for 123 runs in 29.2 overs, giving Midrand Knights a well- deserved 10-run victory.

Shekar registered his best-ever figures of 5/37 (10) and brought up his first fiver for the club. He was awarded the man of the match award for his brilliant all-round performance. He was well supported by Vure 2/31 (10) and Maramreddy 2/23 (5.2).
