JOBURG – The stats revealed the road fatalities over the festive season in Johannesburg, including noteworthy highlights of the City's crime-fighting efforts.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Joburg, Herman Mashaba, together with MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun and Chief of Johannesburg Metro Police Department David Tembe have released the crime statistics for December this morning.

Tembe said the festive road fatalities have dropped by 30 per cent in December 2018 from 103 to 73. He added that they are aiming for a 50 per cent reduction in road fatalities.

“We will intensify by-laws in the City. It will not be business as usual. Phase 2 of Buya Mthetho will take effect,” said Tembe.

He said people are dying on the roads due to negligence. “More speed cameras would be installed in the city. Our people are dying on the roads due to negligence and reckless driving.”
