PICS: Ward 112 delivers beds to residents in Kanana, Mayibuye and Rabie Ridge

MIDRAND – Cllr Madeleine Hicklin said, it is tremendously gratifying to know we have assisted you in even he most basic way. May you sleep soundly and comfortably tonight.

Ward 112 activists and residents embarked on a 100 Beds for Madiba project in the informal settlements in Midrand.

About 18 beds were distributed to the disadvantaged people of Kanana, Mayibuye and Rabie Ridge in Wards 80 and 110.

Two councillors, Sarah Wissler of Ward 23 and Madeleine Hicklin of Ward 112 are the brains behind the idea of turning ‘trash to treasure’.

“Councillor Wissler and I brainstormed the ideas of re-purposing used and discarded wooden pallets into beds for people who have spent their lives sleeping on the floor,” said Hicklin.

“Their joy was infectious and so we decided to tun our hands to creating that type of joy in the broader community.”

The project which is just a year old, distributed 10 beds in December last year and a further 18 beds were distributed in December.

There are another 20 beds scheduled to be distributed in early January.

One of the recipients, Cindy Teffo from Rabie Ridge, expressed her gratitude to the councillors for their compassion and being thoughtful of the less fortunate.

“I am very thankful for the councillors for providing us with beds and I hope that they will continue with the good work they are doing,” she said.

“I am happy that my oldest daughter will have a bed of her own.”

Speaking to the recipients at Corner 4 in Kanana, Hicklin said, “Thank you for accepting our gifts and allowing us to bring a little cheer into your lives.

“It is tremendously gratifying to know we have assisted you in even the most basic way, to better your lives by giving you a bed.

“May you sleep soundly and comfortably tonight.”
