UPDATE: Fire breaks out at local supermarket in Halfway Gardens

HALFWAY GARDENS – Residents who live near the Midway Mews Centre called the Ria Sebetsa Security Services control room to inform them about the fire at around 2.50am.

Update, 13 December, 4.30pm:

Midway Mews Centre Management has confirmed that a fire broke out at Midway Mews Pick n Pay this morning, 13 December.

“The fire caused damaged to the butchery section of the store and the back of house,” the statement read.

“There were no injuries to patrons or staff. The fire was contained and extinguished and did not affect any surrounding stores in the centre. Assessors have been appointed to establish the cause of the fire.”

Management added that the store will open for trade and that the affected section will be cordoned off to ensure the safety of the customers.

 

 

Initial report, 13 December, 9.09am:

A fire broke out at a local supermarket in Midrand in the early hours of this morning, 13 December.

According to Danny Maduray from Ria Sebetsa Security Services, residents who live near the supermarket called his control room to report the fire at around 2.50am.

“My staff immediately dispatched our vehicles and notified the fire department,” Maduray said.

He also added that the first fire engine arrived  at about 3.30am,  followed by another one shortly thereafter.

“The firefighters at first battled to open the door of the store but eventually they succeeded and put out the fire,” added Maduray.

Spokesperson for the Emergency Management Services Nana Radebe confirmed the incident.

“EMS received the structural fire call at 2.57am. The fire at the storeroom took about 2 hours to be fully extinguished. Preliminary investigations for the cause of fire will be done today,” said Radebe.
