Ivory Park police recover firearm and arrest 33-year-old suspect

MIDRAND – The suspect was arrested during a stop-and-search operation.

The Ivory Park police have arrested a 33-year-old man for alleged possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on 19 November.

The pistol which was recovered had six rounds of live ammunition and its serial number erased. Ivory Park Police Station Commander Brigadier David Ngcobo has welcomed the arrest.

Ngcobo assured residents that his staff will double their efforts to ensure that people are safe, both in their homes and other public places. “For us to double our successes, and recover more firearms, we humbly request the assistance of all law-abiding citizens to provide us with any information regarding crime and criminal activities.”

With the festive season approaching, Ngcobo said the police would intensify their programmes to ensure the safety of community members.

“To achieve this, we will intensify stop-and-search operations, same as the one conducted recently which resulted in the recovery of an unlicensed firearm and the arrest of a suspect.”

The 33-year-old man is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court to face charges of illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
