Senior officials who were responsible for the processing of the Pikitup fleet tender, which led to a citywide backlog last week, have been suspended pending an investigation into allegations of misconduct.
Ntombi Khumalo, MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services, said the City’s leadership took this step as a result of the inadequately managed contract. The contract relating to Pikitup’s, non-specialised, specialised and red fleet are now the subject of investigation.
“Should the investigation confirm the allegations of misconduct, the City will not hesitate to take appropriate action,” she said.
The City has now appointed officials to act in these positions to ensure the tenders are finalised as a matter of urgency and advertised speedily.
Pikitup recently operated with limited capacity throughout Johannesburg due to its inability to manage the transition of its ad hoc fleet contracts in Pikitup. However, MMC of Environment and Infrastructure Services, Nico de Jager, said a plan has been put in place that will mitigate the level of disruption to residents and that normal functionality continued late last week.
“The ad hoc fleet contract serves to provide additional vehicles to the City to compensate for the attrition of Pikitup’s aged fleet,” De Jager said.
“Historically, the City has struggled with the timely management of contracts so as to ensure a smooth transition between the end of one contract and the commencement of another. This situation has been exacerbated by the advanced age and volatility of our existing fleet.”
