Two men were arrested by the Ivory Park police for being in possession of three unlicensed firearms, ammunition and a hijacked motor vehicle.
The duo was found in possession of an R5 rifle with 35 rounds of live ammunition and two pistols on 27 September.
The spokesperson for the Ivory Park Police Station, Captain Bernard Matimulane said, “The two were arrested after a local shop – owned by foreign nationals – was robbed at gunpoint by eight suspects travelling in two vehicles. During the robbery, one of the shopkeepers was shot and injured.”
Matimulane said when police rushed to the area, they came across a vehicle matching the description of a car that was wanted by the police.
“Seeing that police were hot on their trail, the occupants decided to abandon the vehicle and fled on foot. That was when two of the occupants were arrested,” said Matimulane.
Station commander for the Ivory Park Police Station Brigadier David Ngcobo commended the Tactical Response Team, the Ivory Park police sector members and the Metro police officers for working together.
“Based on the initial information gathered it is possible that the two suspects may be linked to other robberies in the area,” said Ngcobo.
Police are following up on information that may lead to the arrest of other suspects in the robbery.
The men, aged 31 and 33, are facing a total of nine charges including illegal possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, attempted murder and business robbery.
They are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court soon.
