Veld fires place a major risk to wildlife

KYALAMI – A tortoise known as a stigmochelys pardalis has been badly burnt.

This tortoise is being treated for second-degree burns at the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital in Glenferness.

The hospital’s wildlife rehabilitation specialist, Nicci Wright, advised residents to do a thorough sweep of the area for small wildlife before they start fires and not to throw cigarette butts out of windows, and to only braai in designated areas.

“We’d also advise not to burn firebreaks or garden refuse on windy days to prevent runaway fires.”

Wright stated that the tortoise was doing well and has regained his appetite.
