Family and friends gather to remember local taxi drivers who died in recent KZN shooting

RABIE RIDGE – Officials and community members gather to remember the taxi drivers who lost their lives in a shooting in KwaZulu-Natal on 22 July.

Family members of some of the 13 taxi drivers who were recently killed in KwaZulu-Natal could not hold back their tears during a memorial service held in Rabie Ridge Community Hall.

The memorial service was graced by executive members of the Ivory Park Taxi Association, members of various taxi associations, officials from the South African National Taxi Association and the department of transport as well as local councillors and community members on 26 July.

Local police and Metro police were also present to ensure safety.

The deceased were accosted by gunmen when they were travelling in a Toyota Quantum returning from a funeral of a colleague on 22 July. A number of 11 men were reported dead on 22 July, while four were injured and in hospital. On 23 July, one of the four injured drivers succumbed to his injuries, bringing the number of deceased  to 12. On 25 July, the death toll rose to 13 when another one of the injured men passed away in hospital.

Chairperson for the Ivory Park Taxi Association Buthi Mkhonza revealed that ten of the taxi drivers were from Ivory Park while two were from Kempton Park. It has not yet been confirmed which area the man who recently died came from.
