Midrand SPCA lends a helping hand

MIDRAND – Local SPCA lends a helping hand to a horse centre in the area that was affected by a strike.

The Midrand SPCA was alerted to a strike by the grooms of a major horse training centre in the area recently and stepped in to assist.

Brenda Lucas from the organisation said, “The strike apparently started late in the evening on 20 June and nobody was permitted to enter or leave the premises.”

Pam Pretorius, the general manager of Midrand SPCA, and inspectors Jerry Seemise and Theo Mokgatle, went out on the morning of 21 June to assess the situation and check on the welfare of the horses.

“The striking workers permitted us to enter the property and our team assessed the animals and helped the owners of the horses to feed and water them. Midrand SPCA staff spent most of their day at the centre,” said Lucas.

“The SPCA is not there to assist when people are short staffed, our team went beyond the call of duty to help where help was needed. If animals are in need, our team will always assist in cases of emergencies.”

She said when they went back the next day, it seemed as though the strike has ended. “We will continue to work with the centre to monitor the situation and assist if needed to ensure the welfare of the horses is not compromised.”
