Youth activated into construction

MIDRAND – The organisation would visit five universities across the country.

The South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) has embarked on a youth activation programme to address transformation in the construction sector.

The Executive Communication and Stakeholder Relations of the SACPCMP, Yuven Gounden said the organisation would visit five universities across the country to lure the youth in choosing career paths related to the construction field.

“There’s a need to have a transformation in the sector as it is dominantly white and male. There is a misconception that construction is a dirty job and not for women,” he said.

Gounden said the organisation will be accompanied by female registered professionals in the construction sector to act as role models to the youth.

“We are competing with the engineering and quantity surveying sectors. The activation will include an information session after the lecture takeover, and students will be encouraged to enrol in the SACPCMP’s Student Chapter for further engagement.”

The initiative is done in conjunction with the HDI Youth Marketeers, a company that helps brands and organisations make differences in the lives of youths and families. In the final15 minutes of the lecture, the HDI team will take over the lecture and use a Games of Thrones theme to create awareness of career possibilities in the Project and Construction Management sector.

The first activation took place at the University of Pretoria on 11 April 2017 and will follow with the University of Free State, the Cape Peninsula University, Mangosuthu Buthelezi University and Walter Sisulu University. The SACPCMP is planning to take the activation to high schools in future.
