Advice for land owners regarding land invasions

MIDRAND – The Metro police and the police were kept on their toes by land grabs in the area.

The chairperson of Midrand Community Police Forum Steven Johnstone has advised owners of land under threat of invasion to open a criminal case to ensure speedy action.

Johnstone said they were informed during one of their meetings that the Metro police and Midrand police were kept on their toes by land grabs in the area. Areas that have been targeted were Klipfontein View, Waterfall, President Park and Ivory Park.

“If your land is under threat, you must go straight to the police station and open a case for trespassing immediately,” he said. “The police and the Metro police can only follow up and remove the culprits if they have a case number. Without it, their hands are tied.”

Johnstone added that in most cases of land grabs in Midrand, court interdicts had been obtained to evict the land invaders. “If a person or people and a structure are on the land for more than 24 hours without being reported, it will take a court interdict to remove them and this could take many months. A structure can be defined as four poles planted into the ground and covered with a piece of plastic.”
